Final Post

Which character in your book do you feel has changed the most from the beginning to the end of the story?

Choose one word to describe that character at the beginning of the story and a piece of evidence from the text to support your choice.

Choose another word to describe that character at the end of the book and another piece of evidence to support that word choice.

What kinds of risks do Jake and Jim Ugly face by running away that they may not face if they ran away in the year 2012?  What risks would they face running away in this year instead of when the story actually happens?

Foreshadowing is a tool writers use to build suspense and prepare the reader for action to come. Mr. Fleischman uses foreshadowing in Jim Ugly on page 3 with the statement, “Who’d think to look for dad on a chicken farm? He’d be safe.”  How do you think Mr Fleischman is setting the reader up for what might be coming up later in the book?

Pre-Reading Post

Write one "I wonder" statement you have about your book.  After you have written your statement, predict when you think you will find the answer to your wondering.  Here is an example from the book Dragon in the Sock Drawer:

"I wonder if Jesse and Daisy will get to keep Emmy without getting caught."

I predict this will happen in the middle of the book (the part when they may get caught) and the end the book will say if they are able to keep her or not.
